Helping Patients and Caregivers Navigate Healthcare

Lois Shoemaker has spent more than 25 years caring for patients, educating healthcare professionals, and leading clinical teams at some of the region's most respected healthcare organizations. Her career has included bedside nursing, clinical research, nursing education, and nursing leadership. Recognized for her exceptional ability to translate complex clinical information into engaging, practical education, Lois was recruited into the Department of Nursing Education and Professional Development at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, where she educated healthcare professionals and presented clinical research programs to professional audiences. She went on to serve in nursing leadership, including as House Nursing Supervisor at both George Washington University Hospital and Somerset Medical Center.
Throughout her career, Lois saw firsthand how often patients and families struggled to navigate an increasingly complex healthcare system after leaving the clinical setting. That experience ultimately inspired her to co-found NAVASSIST.
Today, as Co-Founder, Lead Navigator, and Community Educator at NAVASSIST, Lois partners with independent medical practices to implement Medicare's new patient navigation benefits while helping patients, caregivers, and communities better understand and navigate today's healthcare system.
Known for her warm, engaging presentation style, Lois has a unique ability to simplify complex healthcare topics without oversimplifying them. She combines practical guidance, real-world experience, and a touch of humor to create presentations that are informative, approachable, and empowering. Whether speaking to caregivers, seniors, healthcare professionals, or community organizations, her goal is always the same: to leave every audience feeling more confident, better informed, and equipped to navigate the healthcare journey.
